Getting to New Zealand has never been so easy or so cheap. Actually we have just been looking on travel booking sites and for flights between London and Christchurch prices are around £685 a person – when you consider the distance (direct is 11,784 miles) however to get the price for the £685 you have to change twice in Dubai and Sydney its actually 12,226 miles you will have travelled or 5p a mile travelled.
It’s never been so cheap to get to the other side of the planet – however this is leading to a bit of an issue. New Zealand is running out of hotel rooms. In fact the hotel costs are roughly the same around £600.
According to a Bloomberg Report the number of tourists visiting New Zealand is much higher than predicted only a few years ago and because of this hotels all across the country are selling out pretty fast.
Last year 3.5 million people visited New Zealand and by 2022 this is excepted to be 4.5 million a year. The country only has a population of 4.7 million people. The problem is becoming more of an issue and highlighted recently when a group of 53 elderly American tourists had to spend the night in a traditional Maori meeting house when their flight home from Auckland was cancelled and all the hotel rooms were booked.
Andy said, “Before booking your flights, make sure you book your accommodation or at least book them together”.
As tourism is set to grow many are looking at alternative forms of accommodation, like Airbnb. According to data from AirDNA, there are 132 active listing in Christchurch. In Wellington that number rises to nearly 1500. Another cheap alternative is Hostels with these starting around £100 for a week.
The government is aware of the issues and have plans to build an additional 5200 hotel rooms thoughout the country – but they are aware that by 2025 there will be a shortage of around 4,500 rooms. There is another way, you could camp in the beautiful country and there are a wide range of campsites all across the country to choose from – getting your gear there can be an issues but you cant rent most of the stuff you need from companies like Adventure Capital.
Its not just hotel rooms all these tourists are filling up, they are also destroying the islands. There are problems brewing in Paradise with the increase in visitors they are contributing to environmental stresses, including eroding many of the country’s trails and clogging sewerage systems in small towns, which wasn’t designed for large number of visitors.
